According to a Reuters report on November 7 (citing sources), Trump's transition team is considering a number of key figures for leadership positions, including corporate lawyers and Republican regulators, and plans to submit a final list of candidates soon.
The top candidates for the chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) include Robinhood's chief legal officer; former SEC Commissioner Dan Gallagher; and former SEC Commissioner Paul Atkins, who currently leads consulting firm Patomak Global Partners.
Gallagher is a popular candidate among Crypto asset executives who has made a significant contribution to Trump's campaign and is currently a popular candidate for the top position at the SEC.
Industry leaders expect that Gallagher's appointment could change the agency's stance and move away from the policies of current SEC Chairman Gary Gensler, who takes a hard line on Crypto asset regulation.
Sources said that discussions are still ongoing and multiple options are being reviewed.
Another candidate being considered to lead the SEC is Robert Stebbins, a partner at Willkie Farr & Gallagher who served as the SEC's general counsel during the previous Trump administration.
Gensler's term ends in 2026, but he has expressed his intention to step down after the new administration takes office.
Meanwhile, SEC Commissioner Hester Peirce reportedly has no interest in serving as SEC Chairman, despite strong support for him within the Crypto asset industry.
Trump has expressed his intention to roll back “burdensome” regulations, with the focus of reforms likely to be the recently drafted Basel rules that impose higher capital requirements for large banks, as well as other regulations put in place by the Biden administration.
While Trump could replace Acting Comptroller of the Currency Michael Hsu on his first day in office, implementing changes at the Fed’s regulatory arm and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) may take longer.
Federal Reserve Governor Michelle Bowman and FDIC Board Vice Chairman Travis Hill are potential nominees for top banking positions, with the former being an advocate of looser bank regulations.
Jonathan Gould, former senior deputy director of the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, is also reportedly under consideration.
Trump’s campaign has received strong support from Crypto asset interest groups, who have pledged to promote BTC and overhaul the SEC’s regulatory approach.
The report said that Trump's national press secretary Karoline Leavitt said the president-elect will announce personnel appointments soon.
