A Digital Canine Debut
Taiwan introduces its first-ever electronic product detection dog, Wafer. The canine, a 2-year-old black Labrador, was donated by the US non-profit organisation "Operation Underground Railroad" (O.U.R.), dedicated to combating digital crimes. Wafer has already proven its effectiveness in tackling three major cases, revealing criminal groups using 3C products.
The Canine's Journey and Training
Wafer's journey began with coordination between the US Department of Homeland Security and O.U.R. In July of the previous year, officers from Taiwan's Criminal Investigation Bureau underwent training in the US, bringing Wafer back to Taiwan in August. The dog is specifically trained to detect electronic devices coated with chemical substances, such as smartphones, hard drives, USB drives, and even cryptocurrency cold wallets.
Sniffing Out Crime Scenes
Wafer's skills have been instrumental in assisting local law enforcement. The dog's ability to identify the location of hidden electronic devices led to the discovery of concealed tablets and mobile phones in drawers and wardrobes. Notably, Wafer played a crucial role in uncovering a drug trafficking case involving 52 kilograms of methamphetamine.
O.U.R.'s Commitment to Fighting Modern Crimes
Nate Davis, Vice-Chair of O.U.R. Asia, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership with Taiwan's Criminal Investigation Bureau. He emphasised the need for advanced equipment to combat evolving cybercrimes. Wafer's unique ability to detect electronic products positions it as a valuable asset in the fight against digital crime.
The Origin of the Name Wafer
Davis shed light on the choice of the name "Wafer," explaining its connection to Taiwan's production of wafers and similar products. The donation of Wafer to Taiwan was a strategic decision, considering the country's dedication to tackling issues like human trafficking. O.U.R. recognised Taiwan's efforts through discussions with the liaison officer at the Taiwan Police Liaison Office in the Western United States.
A Pioneering Step in Digital Crime Prevention
Wafer's arrival marks a significant step in tackling digital crimes, as law enforcement adapts to the evolving nature of criminal activities. The partnership between Taiwan's Criminal Investigation Bureau and Operation Underground Railroad showcases the importance of innovative approaches in combating modern criminal tactics. Wafer's success stories highlight the potential for electronic detection dogs to become powerful tools in the fight against digital crime.
