Samsung SDI, a South Korean battery manufacturer, has announced a significant advancement in extending the lifespan and enhancing the safety of lithium metal batteries. According to Jin10, the company, in collaboration with Columbia University, has developed a fluorine-based gel polymer electrolyte that effectively inhibits the formation of dendrites, a key factor that has long hindered the performance of lithium metal batteries. These batteries boast the highest energy density among existing battery technologies, surpassing traditional NCA lithium-ion batteries by more than 1.6 times. However, their commercialization has been stalled due to their limited charge-discharge cycles, typically lasting only a few dozen cycles.
