Japan is advancing efforts to diversify its sources of rare earth elements, which are crucial for the high-tech industry. According to Jin10, Sojitz Corporation plans to expand its imports of rare and medium-heavy rare earths from Australia by mid-2027, increasing from the current two types to a maximum of six. Starting in April, Sojitz will begin importing samarium from Australia. Lynas, Australia's largest rare earth company, partially owned by Sojitz, extracts these elements in Western Australia and will procure products from its soon-to-be-operational separation and refining facility in Malaysia.
