The UK is reportedly attempting to persuade AI company Anthropic to expand its operations within the country, according to the Financial Times. The British government has proposed options ranging from expanding Anthropic's office in London to pursuing a dual listing. According to Jin10, neither Anthropic nor the UK's Department for Science, Innovation and Technology have responded to Reuters' requests for comment. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer's office is supporting the department's efforts, with plans to present the proposal to Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei during his visit to the UK at the end of May.
Anthropic has been blacklisted by the U.S. government, which cited national security supply chain risks due to the company's refusal to allow its AI chatbot, Claude, to be used for U.S. surveillance or autonomous weapon systems. A U.S. judge has temporarily halted the implementation of this blacklist, and Anthropic has filed a second lawsuit challenging the supply chain risk designation, which is currently under review.
