A new Reuters/Ipsos poll found that 57% of Americans oppose raising tariffs on Canadian goods, while 20% support the move. According to Sina Finance, 63% also oppose U.S. President Donald Trump renaming Lake Ontario to "Lake America," while 14% support it.
The survey said opposition to the renaming extends within Trump's own party, with about one-third of Republicans in favor and 43% opposed. Among Democrats, only 6% said they agreed.
The poll also showed Americans leaning toward compromise rather than confrontation. According to Sina Finance, 68% said the United States should be willing to make trade concessions with Canada, even if that means not getting most of what it wants, while 25% preferred a tougher stance.
Only 4% of respondents said tariffs would have a mainly positive effect on their personal finances, while 40% expected a mainly negative impact.
