STOCKS | U.S. Commerce Secretary Further Blames Canada for Trade Deal Collapse

U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick further blamed Canada as both sides traded accusations over who derailed the trade deal at the last minute. According to Sina Finance, Lutnick said Canadian negotiators began raising "all kinds of outrageous demands" only hours before the deadline, and that the agreement could have prevented U.S. President Donald Trump’s 50% tariff on Canadian goods from taking effect. He said Canada raised demands related to medium and heavy trucks on Friday, when the talks broke down. Lutnick also said he asked a Canadian minister, "Are you trying to blow up the negotiations?" and was told, "I am not in a position to comment on that." He added that Canada "destroyed this negotiation for purely political reasons," while also acknowledging that the U.S. side may have made some temporary demands as well.
