According to Odaily, Gartner predicts that the rapid development of generative artificial intelligence (AI) will significantly alter the landscape of software engineering. Over the next three years, 80% of engineers worldwide will need to 'upskill' to remain relevant. The company's recent report highlights that most developers have already noticed generative AI tools fundamentally changing software development. In the short term, productivity will see a moderate increase, eventually transitioning to AI-native engineering practices.
However, Gartner maintains that human expertise and creativity remain indispensable and marketable. Senior analyst Philip Walsh emphasized in the report that while AI will reshape the future roles of software engineers, human expertise and creativity are crucial for delivering complex and innovative software. Building AI software will require a new type of software professional—AI engineers.
