According to Cointelegraph, South African investment firm Altvest Capital has officially entered the Bitcoin market, marking its first foray into cryptocurrency investments. The company announced on February 21, 2025, that it has adopted a focused strategy centered solely on Bitcoin (BTC), excluding other cryptocurrencies from its investment plans.
Altvest's board conducted a thorough risk assessment and determined that Bitcoin aligns with its alternative asset investment philosophy. The firm views Bitcoin as offering significant long-term growth potential and serving as a hedge against macroeconomic threats, such as the depreciation of the South African Rand. Altvest CEO Warren Wheatley highlighted Bitcoin's unique attributes, stating, "Bitcoin is fundamentally different from other digital assets. It is the only truly decentralized, scarce, and globally recognized digital asset that aligns with Altvest’s investment philosophy. We see Bitcoin as a strategic reserve asset that enhances our treasury portfolio while providing a hedge against economic instability and currency depreciation."
The company emphasized its exclusive focus on Bitcoin, with no current plans to diversify into other cryptocurrencies or altcoins. Altvest's decision reflects a growing trend among investment firms to consider Bitcoin as a viable asset for long-term treasury allocation, driven by its decentralized nature and potential as a safeguard against economic fluctuations.
