South Korea's Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a strong protest on February 20 against Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi's claim that Dokdo, referred to as Takeshima by Japan, belongs to Japan. According to Jin10, the South Korean government urged Japan to retract the statement made during a parliamentary foreign policy speech. The statement emphasized that Dokdo is clearly an inherent part of South Korean territory and that Japan's repeated assertions are unhelpful for building future-oriented relations between the two countries. South Korea vowed to firmly respond to any provocative actions by Japan.
