According to PANews, Reddit has initiated legal action against Perplexity AI and three other companies, accusing them of unauthorized data scraping from its website. The lawsuit, filed on Wednesday in Manhattan federal court, names data scraping firms Oxylabs UAB, AWMProxy, and SerpApi, alleging they collected Reddit data through Google search results with the intent to resell it. The lawsuit claims that Perplexity AI purchased data from at least one of these companies.
As AI models increasingly rely on vast amounts of data for training and delivering relevant results, Reddit's expanding data repository has become a valuable asset. Reddit has established agreements with OpenAI and Alphabet, granting them permission to use its data for training purposes. However, the company has also taken legal action against firms lacking formal agreements. Earlier this year, Reddit filed a similar data scraping lawsuit against Anthropic in a San Francisco court.
