A Technological Breakthrough in E-Readers
For many, the lack of a color display has been one of the biggest limitations of the Kindle, but according to Amazon executives, the wait was necessary. "Frankly, the technology just wasn’t ready," said Kevin Keith, head of Kindle products at Amazon, during the event. "And we now think the tech is ready."
The Kindle Colorsoft is powered by E Ink’s Kaleido technology, but Amazon has significantly upgraded the display system to introduce color without sacrificing the key features that have made Kindle devices so popular. Central to this upgrade is a newly designed oxide backplane that enables faster and more precise movements of the E Ink’s ink particles. The Colorsoft’s color display is one of its standout features, but Amazon made sure to keep the high-quality reading experience intact. "All the things you think about with Kindle — high resolution, long battery life, fast page turns, good fluidity — we weren’t willing to sacrifice those," said Keith.
The 300ppi (pixels per inch) screen on the Colorsoft maintains the same sharpness as other Kindle devices, ensuring that text remains crisp even in black and white mode. However, the color display adds a whole new dimension, making content like comics and graphic novels more enjoyable to read. In a brief demo during the launch event, the Colorsoft impressed with its sharpness and brightness, even if it doesn’t quite reach the level of an iPad screen in terms of saturation. One of the few downsides is a full-screen flash refresh that occurs when turning pages with large images. Though Amazon claims this only happens with "sufficiently large" images, the demo revealed that even small images can trigger the refresh. While it’s not as fast as an iPad, the Kindle Colorsoft is much quicker than previous color e-ink devices, with pages turning fast and books opening almost instantly.
A More Vibrant User Experience
Beyond the improved reading experience, the color display also enhances the overall interface of the device. The homescreen and library now show book covers in full color, making browsing more visually appealing. The lockscreen has also received an upgrade, offering vibrant standby screens that add aesthetic appeal to the device, especially for readers who display their Kindle on their bedside tables.
Amazon has also added a new feature that allows users to highlight text in multiple colors, a useful tool for students or readers who want to categorize notes. These highlights can later be retrieved by color in the Kindle app, making the reading experience more interactive.

While the Kindle Colorsoft is, for now, an exclusive product with a higher price tag, Keith hinted that the technology may eventually make its way into other Kindle devices. Amazon’s cautious approach to color e-readers was driven by a desire to get the technology right before offering it to customers, and now the company believes it has achieved that goal.
The Kindle Colorsoft is more than just a color version of the Kindle Paperwhite; it’s a device that pushes the boundaries of what e-readers can do.
