Another Chinese celebrity has gone missing in Myanmar. Chinese model, Yang Zeqi was reported missing in Thailand last December, shortly after the recent rescue of another actor Wang Xing from a similar situation.
Ha Zhendong, an anti-fraud advocate, revealed that Yang has been found following significant pressure and extensive efforts from the Thai police. "While we have identified his specific location, the rescue operation would require additional time," Thai police said.
Just like Wang Xing, Yang was also lured by the prospect of a job opportunity. He flew to Thailand on December 20 for a supposed movie role and was last traced near the Thai-Myanmar border.
Yang's family reported that their last contact with him was through a video call nine days after his departure, where he appeared to have sustained an eye injury. Thai authorities also revealed that during the video call with his mother, Yang looked worried and frightened.
During the conversation, Yang also didn't seek help or send any signs, making his father believe that someone might have been keeping a close watch on Yang as he was being detained.
But all communication was lost after his phone was switched off, prompting his family to contact police and seek assistance through social media.
Yang's last known location, based on messages sent to his girlfriend and other friends, showed that he was in Phop Phra or Mae Sot district of Tak. There were no further updates on his social media and it is not known whether he crossed the Moei River to Myanmar.
This development follows the recent safe return of Chinese actor Wang Xing, who was similarly lured to Thailand for a supposed film project before being held in a compound where he and other victims were forced to train as scammers.
The huge publicity the Wang case attracted in China has put the Thai government into damage-control model, as there are signs that some Chinese tourists are already cancelling visits because of safety concerns.
