Just before Trump's inauguration last night, outgoing President Joe Biden pulled out a remarkable move by issuing a preemptive pardon for his own family and and the prominent figures who were determined to grill Trump during his investigation where he was accused of initiating the Jan 6 Capital Hill riot.
The investigative committee who was granted the pardon from Biden includes the former chair of the joint chiefs of staff Mark Milley, the former director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Anthony Fauci, and the former Republican congresswoman Liz Cheney.
But above everything else, Biden is also issuing protection for his brother James Biden, James's wife, Sara Jones Biden; his younger sister Valerie Biden Owens; Valerie's husband John T Owens, and his younger brother Francis W Biden.
Not to be mistaken as being guilty of any wrongdoing
Many of critics have spat at Biden, criticizing him of a last ditch attempt to abuse his power as a President to cover all the wrongdoings of his friends.
Missouri Republican Senator Eric Schmitt said Biden's actions showed that "the guy who claimed he would protect norms continues to bulldoze them and the constitution until the bitter end."
Schmitt also called Biden the worst President in American history.
But in his statement, Biden dispelled all these rumours, saying that he granted all these people pardon not because he had something to hide, but it was to protect his family from the unrelenting attacks and threats his family was facing because of his position as the president.
Fauci and Milley also echoed the same sentiment. In his interview with ABC news, Fauci told reporters that he was a subject of politically motivated threats. He also added
"Let me be perfectly clear: I have committed no crime and there are no possible grounds for any allegation or threat of criminal investigation or prosecution of me."
Similarly, Milley thanked Biden in a statement saying, after 43 years of service to her country, she doesn't wish to spend the rest of her remaining time fighting against those who are seeking retribution for perceived slights.
Several members of the committe behind the Capitol Hill riot also voiced their sentiments. The former Chairman Bennie Thompson, and the former vice-chair Cheney thanked Biden and posits they'd been pardoned today not because they broke the law but because they upheld it.
A last ditch effort by Biden
Biden's final suite of pardons came less than a half hour before his presidency ended and hours before Trump would fulfill his promise to pardon the hundreds of convicted rioters who were behind the Jan 6 Capital Hill riot.
But many have also voiced that Biden's use of Presidential pardon paves a very scary precedent for incoming President Trump to exercise the same powers in even more egregious way.
Even Democrats have said Biden's broad pardon of Hunter, coupled with a attach on a politicized justice system, served to undermine the White House and Biden's legacy.
Outgoing President Joe Biden made a remarkable move on Monday by issuing preemptive pardons for prominent critics of President-elect Donald Trump and members of his own family. This unprecedented action served as a protective measure against potential retaliatory actions by the incoming administration and safeguarded Biden’s closest relatives from future prosecutions.
