Rapper Heather Morgan, also goes by the moniker "Razzlekhan", has released a bizarre new rap video just days before starting her 18-month prison sentence for her role in laundering billions of dollars in stolen crypto.
Her husband, llya Lichtenstein, was convicted of orchestrating the hack and Morgan helped conceal and cash out parts of the the stolen funds.
An Act of rebellion
The notorious entrepreneur and musician teased the new single and music video in recent days. Released Friday, Morgan described her new track “Razzlekhan vs. The United States” an anthem for the misfits like herself.
Morgan later explained that she got the inspiration of the song from her experience during that case that started from her arrest in 2022, her conviction and then her sentencing for for money laundering last year.
During an interview with Decrypt, she also explained that she deliberately didn't want to spell everything out in her song. Instead, her dissatisfaction was "written" in encryption to shine light on the social injustice without being too blatantly offensive to anyone.
By calling herself a misfit, it seems that she also seems to be alluding to her rebellion or dissatisfaction with her sentencing as she seems to be asserting her innocence to the world.
The title, which seems to suggest a conflict with the legal system, paried with the aggressive image in the video, also portrays a stark contrast with her emotional courtroom apology for her role in concealing and cashing out parts of the stolen fortune of almost 120,000 Bitcoins.
During her trial, Morgan's attorneys also tried to fight for a shorter sentence for their client. But the request was rejected by the judge, and she was told to report to prison by the end of January. During her time in prison, her computer usage will also be limited and monitored.
Mogan also revealed that she would be releasing a second song, titled "Diplomat Pussy", which is scheduled to be released at the end of January
The biggest heist ever
In August 2016, Lichtenstein infiltrated the crypto exchange Bitfinex and stole nearly 120,000 Bitcoins, making it the second-largest hack of its kind. At the time of the heist, the approximate value of the Bitcoins that were stolen was totaled to around $72 million. But following Trump's election victory, those Bitcoins could be worth $11.2 billion today.
The theft sent the entire crypto ecosystem into a tailspin and the value of Bitcoin fell about 20% within hours. Bitfinex customers, some of whom had invested their life savings in Bitcoin, lost thousands of dollars overnight.
The couple was arrested five years after the darknet market the couple was using was shut down by the FBI and the data from the servers provided data leading investigators to Lichtenstein and Morgan.
The news of the arrest immediately went viral, not only due to the sky-high amount of money involved, but also because of the perplexing ways Morgan and Lichtenstein documented their lives online.
Prosecutors initially thought that Morgan kept in the dark about her husband's crimes, but they later discovered that not only did Morgan know, she even participated and assisted Lichtenstein in laundering the stolen funds until their arrest.
Bitfinex case turned into a documentary
The whole case was later turned into a Netflix documentary series, titled "The Biggest Heist Ever", which aired on December 6. The documentary was directed by Chris Smith, featuring interviews from investigators, former cyber criminals, and former friends of the couple.
The documentary prode deep into the family background of the couple, and how the couple got the inspiration to commit the heist. The documentary also raised new questions about the hack, suggesting possible issues about national security and exploring the possibility of a tie between Lichtenstein and Russia.
