Elon Musk is offering the owner of Wikipedia $1 billion to change the name of the website to "Dickipedia."
This deal comes after the ongoing debacle between the world's richest man and Wikipedia co-founder Jimmy Wales.
The start of the storm
The whole drama started when the British American entrepreneur expressed on one of his X feeds how difficult it was to verify real and fake journalists amidst the Israel-Palestine conflict.
In his post, Wales also criticised Musk for aggravating the issue by choosing to remove core features that could aid the public to tell the truth from the fake.
But some replied that Wikipedia too has done something similar at some point in time. To which Wales replied that Wikipedians are not journalists.
Musk later fired back at Wales in a post saying "Please fix Wokipedia!"
Musk calling into question Wikipedia's fundraising
In the following days, Elon Musk continued to post multiple posts, opening fire at Wikipedia.
On 22 October, Musk wrote on his social media post
"Have you ever wondered why Wikimedia Foundation wants so much money? It certainly isn't needed to operate Wikipedia. You can literally fit a copy of the entire text on your phone! So, what's the money for? in quiring minds want to know..."
On the same day, Elon Musk published another social media post taunting Wikipedia's with his infamous offer, stating that it would be "in the interests of accuracy."
"I will give them a billion dollars if they change their name to Dickipedia."
Wikipedia later responded to the post in a statement on X, saying
"Wikipedia is the only website in the top-ten most-visited global websites to be run by a nonprofit - and at a fraction of the budget and staffing. We are not funded by advertising, we don't charge a subscription fee, and we don't sell your data."
Today, the offer Elon Musk is offering to Wikipedia still stands, but I doubt we will see a name change anytime soon.
