"Hawk Tuah Girl" Haliey Welch, has made her first social media appearance three months after her disappearance from the web.
During her disappearance, there were many rumours surrounding her fate; while some said that she was pregnant, others claimed that she had ended up in prison. There were even some who speculated that she was even dead.
But Hawk Tuah Girl is dispelling all these rumours with her comeback reappearance and new documentary that promised to give a no-holds-barred documentation of her meteoric rise to fame, her alleged crypto scandal and the bizarre twists that have kept her in the public eye.
From Haliey Welch to Hawk Tuah Girl overnight
Haliey Welch would have remained a nobody if not for an interview with Tim&Dee TV. During the street interview, Welch was asked "what's one move in bed that makes a man go crazy everytime", she quipped, “You gotta give ’em that ‘hawk tuah’ and spit on that thang!”
What started as a cheeky, off-the-cuff remark about bedroom antics spiraled into a pop culture phenomenon. Suddenly, she was everywhere, on memes, merchandise and even on podcasts. Her signature phrase was the internet's favorite new catchphrase, and she was now known by her celebrity name Hawk Tuah Girl overnight.
At the same time, her original interview with Tim&Dee exploded online, amassing over 40 million impressions within days and catapulting the small-town Tennessee native into global meme stardom.
Hawk Tuah Girl admitted that the sudden rise to fame was a little overwhelming for her, and she admitted to hiding at home for weeks. However, she soon embraced her viral status, launching her own podcast (Talk Tuah), a merchandise line, and even a dating app. Her quirky persona earned her millions of followers across social media platforms, solidifying her place as an internet icon.
But then the bubble pop....
Welch’s frame came crashing down in December 2024 when she launched her own memecoin $HAWK. The coin was initially hailed as a success with a market cap of $490 million, but it soon collapsed by over 93% just within minutes.
Blockchain analytics revealed that 96% of the token supply was concentrated in just 285 wallets during its presale. Many of these wallets dumped their holdings immediately after launch. This suspicious collapse made many people believe that Hawk Tuah Girl was the person orchestrating the whole rug-pull operation.
But she was quick to take it to X, denying all the allegations, claiming she never sold her coins and had no intention of defrauding anyone.
"I take this situation extremely seriously and want to address my fans, the investors who had been affected, and the broader community. I am fully cooperating with and am committed to assisting the legal team representing the individuals impacted, as well as to help uncover the truth, hold the responsible parties accountable, and resolve this matter."
While Welch denied any involvement with the project, the backlash was swift. Investors who suffered massive losses filed lawsuits against web3 launchpad overHere and other parties involved in the token's creation. Although Welch was not named in the lawsuits, the scandal drew comparisons to other celebrity-driven crypto "rug pulls."
Documentary and first appearance
The upcoming documentary will chronicle how Welch, a young woman from a small-town with no active social media presence, unknowly created a viral moment that gave way into a global phenomenon.
Bob Friedman, producer and CEO at Bundalow Media + Entertainment, said in a statement
"With only a single sentence, Haliey Welch went from an unknown young woman having a night out on the town to enjoying 15 minutes of fame to global phenomenon who cemented her status in the pop culture lexicon."
He says there are very few people who know what it is like to achieve this level of fame and live under the 24/7 microscope known as social media.
He promised that this documentary would serve as both an inspiring and entertaining story of Haliey's journey, and a lens into the psychological toll that comes with living in the public's eye. Producer Friedman also teased that the film would be more than just a cautionary tale.
Hawk Tuah Girl also recently made her first appearance since her disappearance three months ago. In a comedic Instagram skit, she poked fun of all the online speculation about her, from her pregnancy speculation, death rumours, and her being in prison.
In statement, she promised a great reveal of the truth behind her latest crypto scandal, writing
"I hope y'all have been enjoying the crazy stories of my life unfold on social media. First, I was dead. Then pregnant. Now, I'm wanted by Interpol and in jail. Luckily, we've been working with Bungalow to start spilling the tea and the truth is actually more bizarre than you think."
In the separate event, she also released a podcast in early February this year, where she seemed like she was finally ready to talk about the whole ordeal for the first time.
In the episode, she was joined by FaZe clan's founder, Banks, who comforts her as she breaks down in tears over the ordeal. But the episode was deleted shortly, with Banks later accusing Hawk Tuah Girls's team of releasing the episode when he haven't given the green light.
