Crypto Executive’s Career Ends Abruptly Amid Drugging Allegations in Hong Kong
A partner at DWF Labs, a prominent crypto trading platform, has been swiftly dismissed following accusations that he drugged a woman at a Hong Kong bar on 24 October.
The victim, who goes by Hana, revealed the disturbing details in a thread on X (formerly Twitter), alleging that her drink was repeatedly spiked.
Hana, a Tokyo-based employee of a USD fund, had met the DWF Labs partner for what she believed to be a career opportunity in the crypto industry.
CCTV footage from the bar reportedly captured the incident, now under investigation by Hong Kong authorities.
DWF Labs Reacts: Partner Removed Amid Growing Scrutiny
DWF Labs, headquartered in Singapore with 11 of its 58 employees based in Hong Kong, quickly responded to the allegations with a public statement on 29 October, confirming the dismissal of the partner in question from all management and operational roles.
The firm’s statement reads,
“We are aware of the recent and deeply concerning allegations involving one of our partners, who has been accused of inappropriate and unacceptable behaviour. While the matter is under investigation, DWF Labs has decided to dismiss the said partner from management and operational roles effective immediately.”
The accused, though unnamed by DWF Labs, has been identified as Eugene Ng by Asian journalist Colin Wu, who is widely known for his news media, Wu Blockchain.
Ng is a co-founder of the Binance-supported project OpenEden, focused on real-world asset (RWA) investments.
Since the allegations surfaced, his X account has been locked up, limiting to only approved followers.
His Linkedin page has also been removed.
An Offer Turned Suspicious: Allegations of Drink-Spiking
According to Hana’s account, the partner first approached her under the guise of a job opportunity, promising that she was a “perfect fit” for a role in crypto.
Hana, who has no prior experience in the field, had initially accepted his invitation to discuss the position further.
However, during the meeting, she claims her drink was spiked when she briefly left to use the restroom.
A vigilant waiter reportedly alerted her to the suspicious behaviour, revealing that her companion had attempted to tamper with her drink multiple times while she was away.
Hana wrote in her X post,
“I could see from his confident behaviour that this wasn’t his first attempt, it was a well-executed setup - there must have been other victims.”
“Finish the Drink” – The Insistence Raises Suspicions
Hana’s post also detailed the unsettling persistence shown by her companion, who allegedly pressed her to finish the tampered drink despite her distaste.
“When I returned, I told him I didn’t like the taste of the wine and suggested changing it for another one, but he demanded that I not waste it and finish it before ordering another glass,” she recalled.
Later, as Hana began to feel dizzy upon stepping outside, the alleged partner attempted to convince her to accompany him to his suite at The Murray, a 5-star luxury hotel.
“Come with me; I have a suite at the Murray, and stay close with me. I can give you more alpha, I can help you get to places,” he reportedly urged.
Hana, uncomfortable with his advances, declined.
“If you treat me well, I can give you more inside information,” he allegedly told her in an attempt to sway her.
Evidence Collected, Investigation Underway
Determined to hold the perpetrator accountable, Hana filed an official report at the local police station and obtained the bar’s CCTV footage as evidence.
Ng being caught in action by the CCTV in the bar.
While police have yet to announce any arrests, Hana’s swift action has prompted a broader investigation.
In response, DWF Labs reiterated its commitment to “integrity, respect, and accountability” within its workplace, stressing that over half of its global workforce comprises female employees.
“We do not condone actions that go against our core values,” the firm stated, aligning the executive’s dismissal with these principles.
The incident has brought considerable attention to the crypto industry, raising questions about safety and professionalism in recruitment practices.
Safety in the Shadows of Opportunity
Coinlive urges a critical reflection on the pressing issue of safety for young professionals, particularly women, navigating the often male-dominated crypto industry.
As meetings increasingly take place outside traditional office settings, such as meeting clients over meals or attending industry events, the responsibility to remain vigilant cannot be overstated, as demonstrated in this case.
This incident serves as a stark reminder that opportunities may come with hidden dangers, and the need for awareness and self-protection is paramount.
In this rapidly evolving market, where potential is often clouded by risk, prioritising personal safety is essential for fostering an environment where all individuals can thrive.
Are we doing enough to ensure that the pursuit of success does not come at the cost of our safety?
