Recent claims have emerged suggesting that US Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris referred to Bitcoin as "criminals' money." This statement, purportedly made in private, has stirred significant debate online, with thousands of tweets criticising Harris.

The claim originated from a tweet by David Bailey, CEO of Bitcoin Magazine and organiser of The Bitcoin Conference 2024. Bailey expressed disappointment at Harris not attending the conference in Nashville, Tennessee, from July 25 to 27. In his tweet, he mentioned:

"Major Democratic donors told me Kamala Harris privately said 'Bitcoin is criminals' money.'"

Bailey did not reveal his sources, and there is no verifiable evidence to confirm this statement. Some speculate that Bailey’s frustration over Harris's absence from the conference influenced his tweet.

Harris’s Stance on Cryptocurrency

Harris has rarely spoken publicly about cryptocurrencies. Financial disclosures show that she and her husband have not invested in cryptocurrencies, focusing instead on government bonds and emerging markets.

However, since announcing her presidential bid, Harris’s team appears to be increasing its understanding of cryptocurrencies. According to Decrypt, her advisors have consulted with Bitcoin enthusiast and billionaire Mark Cuban regarding cryptocurrency policies.

Cuban noted that Harris’s team showed a keen interest in cryptocurrencies, asking numerous questions. Although Harris has not made a public statement, her background as a San Francisco politician suggests she may be more aligned with Silicon Valley and tech interests compared to President Biden.

KAMA Meme Coin Surge

Meanwhile, an unofficial Kamala Harris meme coin (KAMA) on the Solana blockchain has surged 10,000% in the past three months, rising from $0.0003216 to $0.0319.

In late March, KAMA’s market cap was under $100,000. Now, it is close to surpassing TREMP (a Trump-themed meme coin), which had a market cap of $150 million in early June but has since dropped to $43 million. In comparison, KAMA’s market cap is $38 million. Another meme coin, BODEN (a Biden-themed coin), has plummeted from $650 million in April to $11 million, a 98% decline.
