OpenAI, the parent company of the widely used AI chatbot ChatGPT, has made a significant move by announcing plans to open an office in Singapore by the end of 2024.
This new location marks the company’s fourth international office, following its recent establishment in Tokyo, Japan.
With a clear vision to create a regional hub, OpenAI aims to strengthen collaboration with local and regional governments, businesses, and institutions across Southeast Asia.
The Singapore office will serve as a vital support centre for OpenAI's customers and partners throughout the Asia-Pacific region.
This initiative reflects OpenAI's acknowledgment of Singapore's prominent position in the tech and AI sectors, particularly in meeting the growing demand for sophisticated AI solutions.
During the Singapore Tech Week, CEO Sam Altman emphasised the city-state's strong history of technology leadership and its role in leveraging AI to address societal challenges while spurring economic growth.
He expressed enthusiasm about the opportunity to work alongside the Singaporean government and the nation’s flourishing AI community.
“Singapore has emerged as a leader in artificial intelligence,” he stated, showcasing the potential for innovative partnerships as OpenAI further establishes its presence in Asia.
OpenAI is set to collaborate with AI Singapore, a national initiative focused on advancing AI research and development within the country.
The partnership involves a commitment of up to US$1 million from OpenAI, aimed at developing resources and open datasets that will ensure AI models are better tailored to the diverse languages and cultures present in Southeast Asia.
Dr. Leslie Teo, senior director of AI products at AI Singapore, noted,
“This effort will improve the availability and quality of Southeast Asian data, and encourage further development and adoption of AI models and solutions in our region.”
This collaboration is expected to enhance the accessibility of advanced AI technologies across Southeast Asia.
In conjunction with its expansion, OpenAI is actively building a team in Singapore, with plans to fill five to ten positions in areas such as sales, customer success, technical success, and security before the year's end.

Earlier this year, OpenAI announced a partnership with Grab, a well-known ride-hailing platform in Southeast Asia.
This collaboration aims to leverage state-of-the-art AI capabilities to enhance user experiences for Grab's customers, partners, and employees.
Additionally, OpenAI has formed partnerships with a host of publishers, including the Associated Press, Financial Times, and TIME, solidifying its reputation and reach in the media landscape.
To spearhead its initiatives in Singapore and throughout the Asia-Pacific region, OpenAI has appointed Oliver Jay as managing director for international operations.
Based in Singapore, Jay will oversee the company's global expansion and regional efforts, reinforcing OpenAI’s commitment to building strong relationships with local stakeholders.
OpenAI is set to host its inaugural Developer Day in Singapore on 21 November 2024.
