Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, recently shared welcomed a new addition to their family-a new baby boy.

On Sunday, Altman shared the an emotional social media post, penning down his honest feeling of being a first-time dad. On his social media post, he wrote

“Welcome to the world, little guy! He came early and is going to be in the NICU for a while. He is doing well, and it’s really nice to be in a little bubble taking care of him. I have never felt such love.”

In his post, Altman also shared that his son was born prematurely and is currently receiving care in the NICU. Even with the premature birth, which brings serious health risks for many babies, Altman reassured his followers that the baby is doing well.

A Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is a specialized hospital unit designed to provide 24/7 care for critically ill newborns. It is equipped with advanced medical staff and equipment to support premature babies or those born with serious health conditions, offering intensive care tailored to their needs.

Bloomberg reported that the couple originally expected their baby to due in March 2025, but the baby was born one month before his expected date.

Sam Altman first hinted at the good news back in an interview, where when asked what was one thing he would be looking for to in 2025, he answered "having a kid." He added that having a kid would be by far the most exciting thing that would happen in his life.

Sam Altman married his longtime partner, Oliver Mulherin, in an intimate seaside ceremony last year, reportedly held in Hawaii near Altman’s residence. Because of how the couple had kept such a low profile, all we know about Mulherin is that he works as a coder and he is from Australia.

The couple made their first public appearance together when Altman invited Mulherin to a White House dinner honoring Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In a 2024 interview with The New York Times, Altman shared that Mulherin loves big families, and the couple had always planned to have children. Now, with the arrival of their baby boy, that dream has become a reality.

The couple's new son has also riled up a lot of speculations and rumours on the origin of the baby, given Altman's involvement in Conception, a startup company that experiments on making artificial human eggs made in a lab.

Conception broke the internet a few years ago by announcing an alternative to surrogacy through the creation of lab-grown humans. The whole vision of the company is to grant same sex couples the chance to have a biological child of their own.

Not only is the company experiment on how to create eggs using other cells from the human body, the company is also exploring how to create sperm so that lesbian couples can have babies with genes from both women.

Many are wondering if this baby boy could be the scientific breakthrough of Conception, and that the company has really successfully made its first lab-grown baby.

But this might not be a complete win for Conception, given the current condition of the baby. It could also raise questions on the repercussions of scientific babies, that such babies could suffer unexpected complications and medical conditions.

Altman’s announcement was met with an outpouring of support from followers and the tech community.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella extended his best wishes, calling parenthood one of life’s most profound and rewarding experiences.

Thousands of others joined in celebrating the news, sending well wishes to Altman and his family.

The birth of their son also comes at a pivotal time for OpenAI. The company is currently restructuring with the addition of a for-profit subsidiary to the organisation while fighting a legal battle with Elon Musk.

The two tech leaders have recently exchanged playful jabs on X, joking about buying each other's platforms.
