Ghibli memes have taken over the internet following OpenAI's recent GPT-4o update, which allows the AI machine to generate images straight from the ChatGPT app.
Since the announcement, the internet has gone crazy with people starting to create images in the Ghibli anime style. The trend goes something like this: First you upload the image on GPT-4o. Then, you give it the prompt: make this into Ghibli anime style.
Since then, the trend has reached a point of no return, with social media flooded with animated versions of prominent characters, such as OpenAI's own founder Sam Altman, Donald Trump, Elon Musk, and the list goes on.
The phenomenon has also captured the attention of the crypto community on twitter, a community that is colloquially known as Crypto Twitter. (CT)
The CT group has often generated trends based on the X posts of widely known figures such as Elon Musk. Previously, Musk has generated attention towards popular memecoins which include DOGE, SHIB, and FLOKI.
The resurgence of the dying memecoins market
The meteoric rise of the Ghibli trend was unsurprisingly capitalized by opportunistic developers to turn it into a memecoin. A particular token that stood out was the Ghiblification Token (GHIBLI), which has emerged as the leading Ghibli-themed memecoin.

Just 19 hours after its creation, the token surged to a $20.8 million market cap, trading at $0.0283-up over 39,000% since launch.
At least 20 similar tokens have emerged, riding on the momentum of the rising trend. While some investors have posted screenshots of impressive portfolio gains on X, others have fallen victim to rug pulls—instances where their investments in Ghibli memecoins have plummeted to $0.
Some traders interpret the frenzy as a hopeful signal or a recovering memecoin market, which has declined 57% since December 8, shortly after Bitcoin reached $100,000. Crypto trader Sachs expressed his optimism on X, stating hopes that one of the Ghibli-themed tokens could reach a $100 million market cap and in turn reinvigorate the memecoin sector.
But there are others who remain skeptical of memecoins, and believe that just like all other memecoins, the Ghibli memecoin is ultimately a risky investment and a temporal trend would ultimately fizzle out.
Crypto Culture Embraces Ghibli Art
Beyond monetary speculation, Crypto Twitter has embraced the creative side of the Ghibli trend. Many users share Ghibli-styled images of themselves, fostering a sense of community and enjoyment within the crypto space.
This cultural phenomenon highlights how CT often goes beyond financial incentives to celebrate artistic and social aspects of emerging trends.
Since its public launch in 2022, ChatGPT has revolutionized both business operations and personal lives around the globe. The latest GPT-4o update further enhances its capabilities, enabling users to generate stunning visuals alongside text.
This advancement underscores AI’s growing role in shaping online culture and driving innovation across industries.
