Just days after Justin Trudeau's announcement that he would be stepping down as the Prime Minister of Canada, Donald Trump posts on his Truth Social account taunting Trudeau that he is willing to adopt Canada and take the country in as the 51st US state.
In another of his posts on Truth social, Trump wrote
"Many people in Canada LOVE being the 51st state. The United States can no longer suffer the massive Trade Deficits and Subsidies that Canada needs to stay afloat."
Trump also claims that if Canada merged with the U.S. There would be no Tariffs, and the people of Canada would need to pay lower taxes, and the country would be TOTALLY SECURE from the threats of Russia and China, who is constantly trying to pry on their land.
President-elect Trump ended by exclaiming "What a great nation it would be!"
Canadian leaders taking Trump's claims seriously
Just days after Trump made these comments, many Canadian politicians reacted to his claims and shot back at him.
Prominent Canadian politician and leader of Ontario, Premier Doug Ford said
"I know under my watch, in Ontario, we would never be for that at all. We have the greatest country in the world, and we have the greatest province anywhere."
Ford wittyly said that instead of buying over Canada, how about if Canada buys over the states of Alaska, Minnesota, and Minneapolis instead? Ford added that he knows that Trump might be joking when he says all these things because he (Trumps) likes to joke around, but under his watch this will never happen.
The Prime Minister of Canada also chipped in on the conversation. In his twitter post, he said
"Never, ever will Canada be part of the United States."
In response, Elon Musk replied to the Trudeau's tweet, saying
"Girl, you're not the governor of Canada anymore, so doesn't matter what you say."
Canada to strike back if Trump starts a Tariff war
Trump has also threatened to use economic force to absorb Canada into the U.S. Interestingly, Trump was also asked if he would use military force to bring Canada to heel, but the incoming president said that he would be only use economic force to convince the leaders of Canada.
So what does "using his economic power mean?" Apparently, Trump is threatening to cut off all of its imported products such as cars and milk as a soft coercion to force Canada to yield.
Trump has also previously announced that he would be taking a tougher stance against Canada in his second term, threatening to slap new tariffs on Canada if it does not do more to stem the flow of migrants and illegal drugs across the US borders.
Reacting to Trump's comments, Premier Ford shot back at Trump, saying
"Right now we ship 4.3 million barrels of crude oil into the US 60% of their energy imports are coming from Canada."
Ford said that Canada would retaliate if Trump were to impose tariffs, saying that a wide range of U.S products shipped to Canada will be targeted, but declined to specify which ones.
