A wooden boat carrying dozens of migrants capsized south of Crete, resulting in at least five deaths and over 20 missing individuals. According to RTHK, the incident occurred early Saturday morning amid strong winds reaching force 6 and waves approximately 2.5 meters high. As rescue vessels approached, many on board moved to one side, causing the boat to lose balance and overturn.
Survivors reported that around 50 people were on the boat at the time of the accident. A Panama-flagged cargo ship rescued 20 individuals. The Greek Coast Guard and vessels from the European Border and Coast Guard Agency discovered several bodies in the area, and search and rescue operations are ongoing. Authorities fear the death toll may rise further.
