The United States is deploying three additional warships and approximately 2,500 Marines to the Middle East, according to U.S. officials on March 20. According to Odaily, this move aims to provide U.S. President Donald Trump with more military options, including potential operations to secure the Strait of Hormuz, which would involve air and naval forces along the Iranian coastline. Insiders have revealed that the Trump administration is also considering deploying ground forces to Iran's Kharg Island, a critical hub for the country's oil exports. This strategy is intended to leverage control over the island to pressure Iran into reopening the Strait of Hormuz for passage. Kharg Island, located over 20 kilometers off the Iranian coast in the northwest Persian Gulf, is the largest base for Iran's oil exports, accounting for about 90% of its oil shipments.
