According to Foresight News, Swiss gambling regulator Gespa has initiated a preliminary investigation into the blockchain token sales supported by FIFA. These tokens allow fans to exchange them for tickets to the 2026 World Cup matches. Gespa, which oversees lotteries and sports betting, is examining whether FIFA is selling sports event tickets or offering services akin to gambling. Gespa's director, Manuel Richard, informed Bloomberg that the regulator needs to determine if the global football governing body complies with local regulations. Gespa has the authority to demand Swiss companies cease improper activities if they violate its rules. For companies operating solely online or based abroad, Gespa can request Swiss internet service providers to block access to the company's website.
FIFA, headquartered in Zurich, collaborates with blockchain software developer Modex Tech Ltd. to operate its FIFA Collect platform. Modex Tech Ltd. has offices in Switzerland, Gibraltar, and Italy. A source familiar with the matter revealed that Modex has not yet been contacted by Gespa. Modex's spokesperson did not respond to requests for comment.
