200 ETH ($500K+) Donated to Charity for Animals
Ethereum Co-founder Vitalik Buterin donated 200 ETH, valued at $532,398 at the time of the donation (a little over $524,000 at the time of writing), to the Effective Altruism Funds' Animal Welfare Fund, sourced from a collection of animal-themed meme coins sent to him over the past year.
Following the donation, Buterin urged communities to contribute directly to charities rather than sending tokens to him, referencing his earlier blog post on the practicality of meme coins.
Tokens "Gifted" to Leading Figures: A Gift or a Curse?
In the crypto space, it has become common for meme coin developers and communities to send tokens to prominent figures' wallets, often with mixed intentions.
Some aim to include these figures in their community, while others use it as a marketing ploy, forcing influential individuals like Buterin to hold large quantities of their tokens, misleading others into believing in their endorsement.
Meme coins, often themed around animals like dogs, cats, and ducks, have frequently found their way into Buterin’s Ethereum wallet without his consent.
Buterin has consistently urged the meme coin community to donate directly to charities instead of sending tokens to him.
For years, crypto enthusiasts have sent tokens to major industry figures' wallets, sometimes in small amounts, but occasionally in substantial sums.
These unsolicited transfers can appear as offerings, given Buterin's esteemed status as a crypto pioneer.
As a known admirer of the late Shiba Inu, Kabosu, popularised by the Doge meme, Buterin's wallets are often targeted with dog-themed memecoins.
In 2021, Shiba Inu's anonymous developers sent 50% of the token's supply—nearly $7 billion worth of SHIB—to Buterin's wallet.
Buterin responded by donating $1 billion of it to India's COVID relief and burning the rest, stating that he did not want to wield such power.
Vitalik Reiterates Importance of Useful & Practical Meme Coins
In a March blog post, Buterin urged the crypto community to rethink the design of meme coins, advocating for their use in more meaningful and practical ways, such as charity fundraising.
As a long-standing critic of how meme coins are often employed—frequently as lewd or speculative tools—Buterin has called for a shift in focus starting in 2024, proposing that public goods funding become more sophisticated and efficient, with an emphasis on tangible societal benefits.
His critique extends to celebrity-backed meme coins, which he views as experiments lacking real purpose.
Reflecting on this trend, Buterin expressed his dissatisfaction with the cycle of celebrity involvement, noting that financial endeavours should serve the public good by promoting art, creativity, open-source software, or improving healthcare.
Buterin's comments specifically addressed the rise of Iggy Azalea's Mother Iggy (MOTHER) meme coin, which he saw as emblematic of this purposeless experimentation.
In contrast, he praised projects like Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis' Stoner Cats, which utilised non-fungible tokens (NFTs) to fund an animated series, pointing out that at least Stoner Cats created something substantive.
Buterin's decision to donate the funds he received from meme coins underscores his belief in a more "positive sum" approach to crypto trading.
His actions and statements reflect a commitment to redirecting the focus of cryptocurrencies toward public good and meaningful societal impact.
As a leading figure in the crypto industry, Buterin sets a standard for others to follow, encouraging the development of welfare-focused projects and a more responsible use of digital assets.
Vitalik Donated Because of a Request, Genuine Altruism, or is Strategic Coin Dump?
The charity donation unfolded through a curious chain of events involving the Neiro Ethereum (NEIRO) meme coin project.
In an attempt to draw attention, Neiro tagged Buterin, a move that succeeded when he sold the tokens.
This sale initially caused NEIRO's price to plummet by 60%, only for it to later surge by 200%.
Following the transaction, Neiro's official X account urged Buterin to donate some of the proceeds to charity.
In response, Buterin shared a donation receipt on X, confirming that he had made the contribution.
Neiro expressed their gratitude on the same thread.
Neiro also posted a lengthy post expressing their delight at being recognised by Buterin.
Less than an hour later, the meme coin project posted yet another gratitude-worthy post thanking Buterin for his support.
Not missing out on the altruistic hype, Neiro coincidentally or strategically (depending on how you view it) announced that from today, they open a new donation Telegram community accepting Neiro token donations.
So was Buterin's donation a genuine act of altruism sparked by Neiro's request, a well-timed coincidence, or a strategic manoeuvre to offload a large quantity of coins while enhancing his public image?
