Indian Railways to Issue NFT Train Tickets for MahaKumbh Mela Pilgrims

Indian Railways has launched a unique initiative to introduce NFT-based train tickets for passengers traveling to the MahaKumbh Mela, one of the world’s largest religious and cultural events.

The integration of ancient spiritual traditions with modern digital technology will ensure smooth travel and enhanced security for millions of attendees on this once-in-a-lifetime pilgrimage.

A Digital Upgrade for a Historic Pilgrimage

The MahaKumbh Mela, which occurs only once every 144 years, is a major Hindu religious festival attracting millions of devotees to the banks of the Ganges River in India.

This massive gathering is not just a local event but a global phenomenon, with spiritual leaders, international celebrities, and pilgrims from around the world participating.

The event’s scale requires a robust, secure, and scalable travel system, and the introduction of NFT tickets is set to meet these challenges.

In collaboration with Chaincode Consulting, the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) will use the Polygon blockchain to mint NFT-based tickets.

The choice of Polygon is significant, as it offers high throughput and low transaction fees, making it suitable for large-scale operations like the MahaKumbh Mela, which is expected to attract a vast number of attendees.

Each NFT ticket issued will be a unique, verifiable entry pass, offering both digital convenience and security.

Using blockchain technology, passengers will have access to tamper-proof records of their ticket purchases, ensuring transparency and reducing the risk of fraud.

The integration of smart contracts will also enable smooth traceability, making the ticketing process more reliable for both travelers and authorities.

With the IRCTC already processing over 1.2 million train ticket bookings daily, this new initiative aims to handle the vast number of pilgrims traveling to the MahaKumbh Mela, improving efficiency and accessibility for both domestic and international travelers.

A Global Audience for a Timeless Festival

The significance of the MahaKumbh Mela extends beyond India.

Recognised by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, this extraordinary event has drawn numerous notable figures, including actor Richard Gere, director David Lynch, and Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama.

These international personalities, alongside millions of other pilgrims, will now have the opportunity to partake in the event using digital tickets that are both secure and easy to verify.

The Kumbh Mela, a related festival held every 12 years, shares the same spiritual essence and attracts millions of visitors each time.

By introducing NFTs for the MahaKumbh Mela, Indian Railways aims to integrate modern technology with this deeply rooted cultural tradition, creating a seamless travel experience for a diverse, global audience.

Modernising Cultural Practices with Innovation

While this digital engagement model is a first for such a historic event, it is not the first time Indian Railways has dabbled in NFT-based ticketing.

In March 2024, the IRCTC had launched a similar initiative for the Holi festival.

These NFT tickets were not just digital representations but served as a celebration of Indian culture, highlighting cities like Lucknow and Delhi.

The use of blockchain technology by Indian Railways is expected to extend beyond this festival, contributing to the long-term modernisation of ticketing systems across India’s vast railway network.

Laurene Jobs, the widow of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, is also expected to attend the 2025 MahaKumbh Mela, adding a further international touch to the occasion, according to the Times of India.
