Italy Unable to Join U.S.-Proposed Peace Committee Due to Constitutional Constraints

Italy's Foreign Minister, Antonio Tajani, has stated that Italy cannot participate in the U.S.-proposed Peace Committee due to constitutional limitations. According to RTHK, Tajani explained in an interview with Italian media that the Italian constitution conflicts with the committee's charter, presenting an insurmountable legal obstacle. He emphasized Italy's willingness to engage in discussions related to peace initiatives and expressed readiness to play an active role in addressing the Gaza issue, including training Palestinian police. Earlier reports from U.S. media indicated that the United States plans to hold the first leadership meeting of the Peace Committee on the 19th of this month in Washington, D.C., focusing on the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip. The reports cited U.S. officials who mentioned that the White House aims to use the meeting to advance the implementation of the second phase of the Gaza ceasefire agreement and to raise funds for Gaza's reconstruction. Preparations for the summit are reportedly still in the early stages, and the plans may undergo changes.
