Silver medals contain 500 grams of silver without gold plating, while bronze medals are made of pure bronze. Based on current precious metal prices, the intrinsic value of an Olympic gold medal is approximately $2,500. On Monday, gold prices briefly rose to $5,090 per ounce, increasing the value of the gold in a Winter Olympics gold medal to $1,018. With silver priced at $83 per ounce, the silver content in a gold medal is valued at approximately $1,463. Thus, the total value of a gold medal, based solely on its material composition, reaches $2,481.
