Crypto Use in Argentina Rises as Stablecoin Payments Remain Sticky

Argentina is one of the world’s highest crypto-adoption markets, with about one in five people using cryptocurrency. In 2024, downloads of the country’s top 15 crypto apps nearly doubled, rising 93% from the previous year. According to PANews, Argentina’s preference for dollars predates crypto. After the 2001-2002 banking crisis and the forced conversion of dollar deposits and loans into pesos under Decree 214/2002, trust in the peso weakened and many people kept savings outside the banking system. Stablecoins gained traction after capital controls were reimposed in 2019, when monthly official dollar purchases were capped at $200 and additional eligibility rules excluded many people. Dollar-pegged stablecoins became an alternative way to hold dollars outside the official market. Stablecoins have also become more common in contractor pay. In April 2024, when year-over-year inflation reached 289%, the share of Argentine contractors paid in USDC also increased, according to Deel, which processes payroll in more than 160 countries. Using January 2024 as a baseline, the two measures moved together for a period before inflation eased and stablecoin usage also declined. By July 2026, both were at about one-fifth of their respective peaks. In Argentina, buying crypto with pesos often means buying dollars, and 94% of peso crypto transactions go to stablecoins, according to Artemis. The article said digital dollars were for several years more expensive than dollars bought at the official exchange rate, and by 2023 the gap between the official and parallel market rates had widened to more than 100%. After Argentina removed most restrictions on personal dollar purchases in April 2025, the exchange rates largely converged. As of August 28, 2026, a digital dollar was about 4% more expensive than a dollar bought through the official market. Lemon, one of Argentina’s largest crypto wallets, has seen downloads rise every quarter, even as monthly inflation fell from 25.5% to 2.1%.
