OpenAI announced that it has begun deploying an AI-based age prediction system designed to identify ChatGPT users under the age of 18 and automatically enforce content restrictions. The system assesses a user's age by analyzing signals such as account duration, activity time, and behavioral patterns, rather than relying solely on the birth date provided at registration. Accounts identified as belonging to minors will be subject to strict restrictions on violent and sexually sensitive content. OpenAI stated that if an adult user is wrongly identified, they can restore access by uploading a selfie or identification document through the third-party service Persona to complete age verification. Additionally, the update includes new parental controls, allowing parents to set quiet periods and receive notifications when the system detects serious emotional distress in their children. The system is currently available in the ChatGPT consumer program and is expected to roll out in the EU in the coming weeks.
