SoftBank announced on September 2 that it had successfully conducted a communication trial of its HAPS airborne mobile base station over Japan. According to Jiemian News, the blimp-type base station can fly continuously at about 20 kilometers above the ground for several months to around half a year. In the trial, the equipment first took off in the United States, then flew over areas around Muroto in Kochi Prefecture from August 23 to 24, where it was confirmed that it could handle voice calls, including emergency calls, video calls, and communications with small drones. SoftBank said it plans to expand the flight area and duration in 2027 and to provide communication services to companies during normal operations.
