The surge in XRP and ADA over the past two weeks has taught me a lesson in humility. Earlier this year, I sold my XRP and ADA and moved my funds into newer alternatives. Some alternatives like SUI, ZEUS, and BRETT have performed well, while others like SUIMAN, LIKE, and FET have not.

XRP, ADA, and other traditional currencies have outperformed many of my picks, but it's too late for me to actively chase them. I salute everyone reading this who had the courage to hold these coins when no one in the crypto community was talking about them.
If you follow anyone on YouTube today, I bet you’ve heard a lot of puffery. Regardless of the channel, I get the feeling that influencers probably truly believe their stuff doesn’t stink.
But the reality is that anyone could have mentioned any coin in the past month and there’s a good chance that the price of that coin would have gone crazy. Ironically, when a big influencer mentions a coin, it creates a self-fulfilling prophecy that drives the price higher. I wish there was a monkey throwing darts at the CoinGecko printout and comparing it to my portfolio.
I am almost certain that they are all peddling their own bags, and that is okay. I do the same thing in my articles, so I cannot judge. However, crypto YouTubers (rightfully) have a much larger audience than I do. After all, how many people besides you read it?
I mention this because we have to understand that no one in this space knows more than anyone else. I follow many crypto analysts, and no one expected the surge in HBAR, ALGO, ZIL, or XLM. I’m just as bad because I recently discredited many of these legacy projects in an article titled “If You Own These Cryptocurrencies, Start Panic
”. I got it wrong in that article, but I won’t beat myself up too much. I wrote “My 10 Favorite Crypto Investments
Since writing, it’s up 68%, while BTC is up 46%. I still like all of these coins, so it might be worth a look if you haven’t read it yet. This was a long preface, and if you’ve made it this far, I appreciate your sticking around. I’m going to share five altcoins that I recently purchased or added to an existing bag that I’m not fully invested in yet. I’ll go from most conservative to most adventurous. Also, all of these coins are available on Coinbase and/or Kraken. Token #1: AVAX Current Price: $51.34 Current Market Cap: $21B
Avalanche has not been as successful as other Layer 1s (with actual users) like Solana, Sui, or Tron. Here are some reasons why I like AVAX right now.
It is currently trading 65% below its all-time high.
It has games and layer 1 narratives, and games have yet to take off. But big influencers are heavily promoting games, so I think it's only a matter of time before capital enters the industry. This should be good for AVAX.
Many people from the last cycle remember how AVAX took off. AVAX is available on most of the top exchanges, so retail players can easily buy it.
Token #2: NEAR Current Price: $7.31 Current Market Cap: $8.9 billion
Like Avalanche, Near Protocol has been a lackluster Layer 1. Also, like AVAX, NEAR is trading near its highest point in a year. Here’s why I like NEAR right now.
It’s currently trading 64% below its all-time high.
It has AI and a layer 1 narrative, and AI has yet to take off. There are hundreds of small AI projects, and they should draw attention to the AI space. I expect this will attract more investors to NEAR.
While I haven't heard too many influencers focus on NEAR, it's easy to create a narrative based on its AI expertise, high user base, and small number of tokens issued.
Token #3: GALA Current Price: $0.052 Current Market Cap: $1.9 Billion
GALA is one of the most well-known brands in the crypto gaming space. It has a huge gaming ecosystem and the GALA token can be used for in-game purchases and NFTs. Here are a few reasons why I like GALA.
It is currently trading 93% below its all-time high.
This is one of the top projects in the Gaming category. As mentioned before, Gaming should have its turn in this cycle, and rather than trying to find an individual game, I prefer to look at this as speculation on the sector.
Low unit bias. Retail players tend to favor low-priced cryptocurrencies. Coin #4: ARKM Current Price: $2.38 Current Market Cap: $585M Arkham is one of the most respected and well-known analytics platforms in the crypto space. Mentions of Arkham appear frequently in crypto news and X-posts. Here are some other reasons why I recently bought ARKM. It has almost no competitors. Moreover, its token is the native currency on its platform.
The project has received investment from notable investors such as OpenAI co-founder, Palantir co-founder, Tim Draper, and Wintermute.
Many people don't know Arkham has a token. They provide a valuable service; perhaps at some point in this cycle, fundamentals will earn respect. Coin #5: VANRY Current Price: $0.17 Current Market Cap: $283M Vanar Chain is a layer 1 blockchain. Unlike other chains, it has a fixed cost of just pennies per transaction. This makes it a great choice for AI, gaming, and mixed reality. Here are some more things I like about VANRY. It has a low market cap for a Layer 1 that is listed on a tier 1 exchange. Additionally, the token has been trading for less than 1 year, so price discovery is pending.
I have heard it mentioned by several influential people I respect. The low unit deviation combined with this means it can be pumped quickly.
Their website shows that Vanar is being developed in partnership with Nvidia and Google Cloud. I couldn't find details on this, but I doubt it would appear on their website if there was no association.
Key Takeaways
I feel confident enough in these cryptocurrencies to add them to my portfolio. The risk/reward of these tokens is attractive and they can be purchased on US exchanges.
While I don't know if they can go up 1000%, they are diversified enough to outperform the overall crypto market.
If you are exploring the crypto space, you will be bombarded with advice. Keep in mind that these advices are all because someone is promoting their bag (as was my case) or collecting money to support the project.
