What is Hamas and who is Haniyeh?

Haniyeh was born in the Shati refugee camp in Gaza City and joined Hamas while studying at the Islamic University of Gaza.

Hamas is recognized as a terrorist organization in the United States and Singapore and other countries.

In 2006, Haniyeh won the Palestinian Legislative Council election as the first candidate of Hamas, and was later appointed as the Prime Minister of the Autonomous Government by Abbas, Chairman of the Palestinian National Authority, becoming the first Hamas Prime Minister in Palestinian history.
