Metaplanet Buys 1,088 More Bitcoin as It Closes in on 10,000 BTC Target
Japanese investment firm Metaplanet has added another 1,088 bitcoin to its corporate treasury, lifting its total holdings to 8,888 BTC—now valued at over $930 million.
The purchase was made at an average price of 15.5 million yen per bitcoin, amounting to a total spend of 16.885 billion yen, or approximately $117.5 million.
How Metaplanet Became Asia’s Largest Corporate Bitcoin Holder
Since adopting a Bitcoin-focused treasury strategy in April 2024, Metaplanet has emerged as the most aggressive corporate bitcoin accumulator in Asia.
The company’s move mirrors the path taken by US-based MicroStrategy, a key influence cited by Metaplanet CEO Simon Gerovich.
Gerovich said in earlier remarks, referencing MicroStrategy’s executive chairman Michael Saylor,
“We’ve followed a model that’s proven effective on a global scale.”
By the first half of 2025 alone, Metaplanet has acquired 7,126 BTC, moving rapidly toward its end-of-year goal of 10,000 BTC.
That target would place the company among the top ten public bitcoin holders worldwide.
Investor Confidence Boosts Shares Nearly 10 Percent
Following news of the latest acquisition, Metaplanet’s shares surged 9.74% on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, closing at 1,171 yen.
The company’s stock has risen more than 236% since the beginning of the year, a performance that reflects growing investor support for its digital asset strategy.
Zero-Interest Bonds Fuel Bitcoin Buying Without Equity Dilution
Metaplanet has been financing its bitcoin purchases through a series of debt instruments designed to preserve shareholder value.
Most recently, the firm issued $50 million in zero-coupon bonds, including a $21 million tranche placed with Evo Fund.
The bond series, structured without traditional guarantees or collateral, matures on 28 November 2025 and includes early redemption flexibility.
Evo Fund can redeem the bonds in full or in part with just five days’ notice.
Each bond carries a face value of $525,000.
How Much Has Metaplanet Spent in Total?
To date, Metaplanet has spent approximately 122.269 billion yen accumulating bitcoin, with its average purchase price across all holdings now standing at 13.75 million yen per BTC.
As of Monday trading, Bitcoin was priced around $105,000 in Asian hours, holding steady over the previous 24 hours.
Based on current market levels, Metaplanet’s BTC holdings have generated a year-to-date return of 66.3%, with gains in bitcoin terms reaching 2,684 BTC—equivalent to nearly 40.5 billion yen.
