These advanced tools accurately predicted Gaemi’s trajectory and impact a full eight days before landfall, far surpassing the performance of conventional forecasting systems.
Chia Hsin-sing, director at Taiwan Integrated Disaster Prevention of Technology Engineering Consulting Company Ltd., remarked,
“People are starting to realise AI indeed delivered some stunning performances compared to conventional models.”

As Bebinca gains strength, Taiwan's Central Weather Administration (CWA) is once again relying on AI for its tracking and forecasting needs.
The AI systems, including Huawei’s Pangu-Weather and the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts' deep learning-based model, are providing crucial insights into the storm’s path.
Lin Ping-yu, a forecaster at the CWA, expressed confidence in these tools:
“This [AI] is a good thing for us. It is like having one more useful tool to use.”
The AI-driven forecasts are enabling forecasters to better assess the likelihood of a direct hit, offering a significant improvement in prediction accuracy.

This enhanced precision was notably evident with Typhoon Gaemi, where AI detected an unusual loop in its path that extended its effects on Taiwan.
This insight led to a rare early warning for 1.8 metres (5.9 feet) of rainfall, which proved to be accurate and crucial for timely preparations.

Nvidia’s new generative AI tool, CorrDiff, aims to refine predictions of typhoon landfall locations and enhance the resolution of storm imagery.
CWA Deputy Head Lu Kuo-Chen highlighted the potential of these advancements, stating,
“We are seeing the potential.”
Despite the promising results, experts like Chia Hsin-sing caution that AI is still in its developmental phase.
Chia questioned, reflecting on AI’s success with Gaemi:
“Was it just good luck?”
He further commented:
“We need to give AI a bit more time. It is something to look forward to.”
