根据IDC的数据，2022年全球LBS游戏市场规模为1020亿美元，预计2023年将达到1150亿美元。此外，2022年全球LBS游戏用户规模为27.5亿人，预计2023年将达到29.5亿人。全球LBS游戏市场呈现快速增长的态势。2022年，全球LBS游戏市场同比增长12%。预计2023年，全球LBS游戏市场将继续保持增长态势，同比增长13%。
2016年7月，Niantic推出的AR+LBS手机游戏《Pokemon Go》取得了空前成功，不仅在全球范围内获得了广泛关注，也是手游史上最卖座的游戏之一。凭借着颠覆性的LBS玩法以及宝可梦这个家喻户晓的顶级IP加持，《Pokemon Go》上线前三年累积吸金12.7亿美元，成绩斐然。并且持续到23年10月，dau仍然稳定在3000w左右，多国畅销品前十的常客。
其实，LBS并不是什么新东西，是类似GPS提供位置服务的一种技术。LBS与游戏结合，为游戏社交提供了更多的可能。
提到LBS可能多数人产生的概念是社交应用，例如微信，许多策划在玩法设计上逐渐向社交功能靠拢，希望通过LBS实现游戏的社交化，因此设计了大量的社交功能。此实为一种本末倒置，既然是游戏，玩法是绝对的主体，只有在玩法被用户所接受并因此累积到一定的用户基数的情况下，游戏才可能实现一定的社交功能。由此，社交元素与游戏元素孰重孰轻也就不言而喻。
之所以说LBS赛道冷门但不小众，是因为游戏引擎与地图的结合很难有团队真正掌握，其实地图定位很容易，难点在与玩法的结合，需要对应的解决方案。
“冷门但不小众”的LBS市场的沉寂直到最近，我们观察到Niantic与卡普空合作推出的新作《怪物猎人Now》，该游戏在日本市场的首周下载量超过100万次，创造了约4000万日元的首周收入，峰值日流水达1000万元，这是Niantic多年来推出的新游戏中开局表现最好的一次。目前《怪物猎人Now》累计流水达到6000万元，至今保持日本畅销榜TOP10。
根据官方消息，《怪物猎人 Now》自发售以来，全球首周下载量就还突破 500 万次。为了纪念这一成就，Niantic还在游戏内准备了兑换码等奖励。
市场盘子很大是LBS游戏的特点，但是对于这样一个盘子，开发的技术门槛显然高于其他游戏的品类，其市场挑战与机会并存：
技术限制：LBS游戏需要精确的定位技术和实时数据传输技术，这对技术提出了一定的要求。
成本高：LBS游戏的开发和运营成本较高，这对开发商和运营商提出了一定的挑战。
用户习惯：LBS游戏需要玩家走出家门，这与传统游戏的“宅”文化存在一定的冲突。
