The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has issued numerous subpoenas to social media companies, including Meta, Google, Reddit, and Discord, over recent months. According to Ming Pao, these subpoenas demand personal information such as names, emails, and phone numbers of users who criticize the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) while using anonymous accounts.
Tech companies have stated that they review government requests before deciding whether to comply. Some companies also notify the individuals involved, giving them 10 to 14 days to contest the subpoenas. The Department of Homeland Security claims that the data requests are intended to ensure the safety of ICE personnel.
The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) has criticized the current administration, accusing it of being more aggressive than its predecessor. The ACLU argues that the subpoenas allow the Department of Homeland Security to bypass judicial oversight and exert pressure on individuals.
