Block's Layoffs: AI to Replace Middle Management, Says Jack Dorsey

Jack Dorsey has clarified that Block's recent layoffs of approximately 4,000 employees are part of a permanent restructuring strategy aimed at replacing middle management with artificial intelligence, rather than a mere cost-cutting measure. According to NS3.AI, Dorsey, along with Sequoia Capital managing partner Roelof Botha, emphasized that AI-driven models for internal and customer operations could assume coordination tasks traditionally managed by human supervisors. However, current and former Block employees have expressed concerns to the Guardian, noting that around 95% of AI-generated code changes still require human intervention. Additionally, these employees highlighted that AI tools are not yet capable of handling regulated banking and money-transfer responsibilities.
