U.S. Anti-Drone System to Bolster Middle East Defense Against Iranian Drones

The United States is set to deploy an anti-drone system, proven effective against Russian drones in Ukraine, to the Middle East to enhance defenses against Iranian drones. According to Jin10, two U.S. officials revealed that the system, named 'Merops,' will soon be sent to the region. Despite successful interceptions of Iranian missiles using Patriot and THAAD systems, effective anti-drone measures in the Middle East remain limited. A U.S. defense official noted that the current response to Iranian 'Witness' drones has been disappointing. The Merops system employs a 'drone versus drone' strategy, featuring compact dimensions that allow it to be transported in a standard pickup truck bed. It can identify and approach drones, utilizing artificial intelligence for navigation when satellite and electronic communications are disrupted. Drones pose challenges for radar systems calibrated for detecting high-speed missiles, as they are difficult to pinpoint accurately and can be mistaken for birds or aircraft. The Merops system is specifically designed to detect and neutralize drones, offering a cost-effective solution compared to missiles costing hundreds of thousands of dollars.
