U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff has publicly called for the impeachment of President Donald Trump, citing the president’s controversial plan to host a private dinner for top holders of the Official Trump memecoin as a clear case of “selling access” to the presidency.
Speaking at a town hall meeting last Friday, Ossoff condemned the arrangement, stating,
“When the sitting president of the United States is selling access for what are effectively payments directly to him, there is no question that that rises to the level of an impeachable offense".
Ossoff would be running for the state of Georgia in the midterm elections that would be taking place in 2026.
However, Ossoff states that it would be very difficult to kick Trump out of his seat with the Republicans holding the majority of the seats both at the House of Representatives and the Senate.
Thus, he is looking forward for the Democratic party to gain control of the Congress during the upcoming election.
An exclusive dinner with President Trump
The controversy erupted after the Official Trump memecoin website announced on April 23 that President Trump would host a secret lucky draw for the token holders of its family business, World Liberty Financial.
The rule of the lucky draw is simple: the top 220 TRUMP token holders would stand a chance to have an exclusive dinner with the president at his Washington D.C golf club.
The post adds that the top 25 holders will receive additional perks, including a VIP reception special White House tour the following day.
While the invitation grants access to the event, attendees must cover all expenses, including travel, lodging, transportation, and incidental costs.
All participants are required to pass background checks, no guest would be allowed, with additional restrictions barring guests and individuals from KYC watchlist countries.
Just hours after the announcement was made, the price of the Trump tokens soared more than 50% in value, and wallets associated with the Trump Organisation reportedly saw their value increase by around $100 million.
$400 is all you need...
The rumour stemmed from community members citing the Solana blockchain explorer showing holders on the token's contract address. At the time of writing, the explorer showed that the 220th largest holder has 33,114 TRUMP, which is worth roughly $400,000.
This led to the assumption that such a huge investment was needed to qualify for the event, sparking backlash that the event was exclusive to just its wealthiest holders.
But the $TRUMP team was quite to nip these rumours in the bud. In a statement on X, the team clarified that the eligibility for the dinner is determined solely by a time-weighted average of $TRUMP tokens balances held by registered users on the official leaderboard throughout the contest period.
This means it would exclude locked tokens, exchange holding. Based on their accurate metric, the actual value of the 220th holder is just $400, essentially opening the contest for literally everyone and anyone.
Lawmakers call for Trump's impeachment
Legal and ethics experts have raised red flags over the arrangement, warning that it blurs the line between political influence and personal financial gain.
Senators Adam Schiff and Elizabeth Warren have formally requested a federal ethics investigation, arguing that the dinner offer constitutes “pay-to-play” corruption and could allow individuals, including foreign nationals and corporate entities with vested interests in federal policy, to buy access to the president.
Critics point out that this is not a campaign fundraiser or PAC event but a private enterprise directly benefiting Trump and his family.
Senator Ossoff’s impeachment call joins a growing chorus of lawmakers and ethics experts alarmed by what they describe as one of the most brazen conflicts of interest ever seen in the Oval Office.
While the path to impeachment remains uncertain, the controversy underscores mounting concerns about the intersection of crypto, politics, and presidential power in the digital age.
