German Public Transport Faces Disruption Due to Union Strike

Public transportation in many German cities and municipalities is expected to face disruptions on Monday due to a strike called by Verdi, Germany's second-largest union. According to Jin10, the strike is in response to demands for shorter working hours and increased bonuses. Christine Behle, the union's vice-chair, stated on the Verdi website over the weekend that employees in the public transport sector are under significant pressure due to unfavorable working hours, shift work, and ongoing time constraints. She emphasized the urgent need for improvements to reduce high turnover rates and attract reliable technical workers back to the industry. Currently, collective bargaining is underway in Germany's 16 federal states, with Verdi advocating for better working conditions. Their demands include reducing weekly working hours and shift lengths, extending rest periods, and increasing bonuses for night and weekend work. According to Verdi, the dispute involves nearly 100,000 employees from 150 municipal transport and bus companies. The strike will not affect intercity train routes operated by the state-owned railway company, Deutsche Bahn.
