Greece has been hit by severe convective weather for two consecutive days, resulting in at least one death and significant flooding and infrastructure damage. According to RTHK, heavy rain and strong winds have affected various parts of Greece since last Wednesday, with the Attica region, where Athens is located, being particularly hard-hit. The fire department reported approximately 500 emergency calls in Attica alone, mainly concerning flooded homes, fallen trees, and people trapped in vehicles. A man in his 50s was swept away by floodwaters and died.
In the southern regions of Rhodes and Poros, the storm caused river overflows, road damage, and power outages. Winds reached force 9, severely impacting maritime traffic, with many ships forced to halt operations and coastal shipping disrupted. The meteorological department forecasts that the extreme weather will persist, potentially continuing in northern Greece until the 4th of this month. Authorities have urged residents to minimize outdoor activities, stay safe, and be cautious of secondary disasters.
