According to Blockworks, Animoca Brands is modernizing the chess experience with Anichess, a new Web3-infused variant of the world's oldest game. Australian game developer iCandy Interactive, an Animoca subsidiary, has partnered with development team Hashcode Studio to create a player-versus-environment (PvE) version of the game. The first playable mini-game went live in January, featuring a tutorial and puzzles. Players can collect 'Orbs of Power' digital collectibles on the Polygon proof-of-stake chain, which forms a key part of the Anichess Universe.
Anichess aims to combine the core values of traditional chess with fantasy-based strategic elements and storylines. The game's unique mechanics, such as bishops transforming into knights and rooks moving diagonally, may initially sidestep the issue of cheating that has plagued online chess platforms. However, this advantage may be short-lived if someone figures out how to scrape the events occurring in the web app and programs in the new rules.
The main Anichess game, expected to launch later this quarter, will feature a player-vs-player (PVP) mode. Chess.com, an Anichess partner with a sophisticated anti-cheating team, has previously featured chess and crypto crossovers, which could help propel a Web3 chess game into the mainstream. For now, Anichess offers an amusing and child-friendly chess variant that feels like the spiritual successor to former World Champion Magnus Carlsen's earlier Play Magnus apps like Knight Runner and the now-defunct Magnus Kingdom.
