German industrial production experienced its first decline since August last year, indicating ongoing challenges in overcoming a prolonged downturn. According to Jin10, output fell by 1.9% in December, contrasting with the revised growth of 0.2% in the previous month. Economists had anticipated a much smaller drop of 0.3%, and the unexpectedly weak data dampens market optimism that had been fueled by hopes of increased German spending benefiting Europe's largest economy.
Business surveys continue to show lukewarm responses, with companies calling for reforms to address welfare and bureaucratic issues. A shortage of skilled workers presents another challenge, alongside external threats such as the relationship between Europe and the United States. Friday's data revealed that the decline in output was primarily due to reduced production in the automotive industry, machinery manufacturing, and machine maintenance and assembly sectors.
Another report released on Friday showed that both exports and imports rose in December, expanding the trade surplus to 17.1 billion euros (approximately $20.2 billion). The United States remains Germany's most significant market, with shipments to the U.S. increasing by 8.9% in November. However, compared to December 2024, exports to the U.S. decreased by 12.9%.
